The following is the Write-up generated to support the awarding of the Heroism Award to Zach H.: When, on September 17, 2006, Shawn H. was washing down his driveway because of the droppings from a tree to which he was highly allergic, his chest began to tighten and he went inside to self-treat. After attempting an inhaler with no effect, Mr. H. attempted to set up a breathing machine that also was ineffective. Mr. H.'s allergies skyrocketed and he began to become disoriented and disabled. Tenderfoot Scout Zachary H., 11, observed this behavior and made inquiries of his father's condition, asking him "are you going to die?" Shawn's wife, Lisa, came home and was asked by Mr. H. to summon the aid of a neighbor to watch the kids while Lisa took Shawn to the emergency room. During Lisa's absence, Mr. H.'s allergies became even worse, experiencing tunnel vision and beginning to pass out. Zachary observed this deteriorating condition and reset the breathing machine, reloaded medication therein, and held the breather up to his father's nose and mouth, thereby stabilizing him. During this time, Zachary talked to his father in an effort to keep him calm and reduce panic. Lisa returned without a neighbor to help and Zachary asked her to call 911. Zachary then went to fetch a neighbor. When Zachary returned with a neighbor to help, EMTs had arrived and taken over the breathing treatments. Shawn was then transported to the emergency room for further treatments.
Shawn now caries an Epi pen at all times due to the serious nature of his allergic reactions that had never been so severe prior to this incident. |
